“She’s really mad,” Brock said, resuming his seat.

“No kidding.” Steele dragged his hands over his face. “There’s no way we’re going to set up a meeting between Harper and her ex-husband.”

“Keep in mind, she is the one with the most to lose here.” Brock finished her cinnamon roll, licking the icing off his fingers “She deserves some say in what happens next.”

He didn’t like it. Not one bit. But he understood her frustration. “What we need is a solid lead.”

“The gun may give us something,” Brock agreed.

“I need to call Rhy. Let him know the SUV has been compromised and about the new evidence against Harper.”

“I’ll return his SUV.” Brock sighed, then said, “It’s awfully convenient that the gun showed up at her place. Maybe we shouldn’t trust the ATF guys.”

That was his thought too. “I know they risked their lives at the warehouse shooting and, according to Flynn, saved his life. But if you could have seen how Perkins was gloating over the gun . . .” He didn’t finish.

“Okay, then Harper has a point. If not the ATF guys, then Grotto could be orchestrating this with Feldman.”

“Or maybe Grotto is doing this on his own,” Steele mused. “Maybe he thinks Feldman was arrested because Harper found something incriminating?”

“That’s possible.” Brock glanced toward the restrooms. “If she doesn’t come back soon, you need to check on her.”

Steele slouched back in the booth. “You really think her meeting with Feldman is a good idea?”

“I didn’t at first, but now? Maybe.” When Steele scowled, Brock quickly added, “Feldman is in custody. He can’t hurt her.”

He wasn’t convinced that was true. Feldman had hurt her, physically and emotionally. The last thing he wanted was for her to be hurt all over again.

As if the recent events surrounding the planted gun and the shooting weren’t bad enough, she wanted to face the lion in his den.

He abruptly stood, then paused when he saw Harper returning to the table. Her eyes looked slightly puffy, as if she’d been crying. He wanted to ask if she was okay, but that seemed silly.

She wasn’t okay. Would not be okay until they’d found and arrested Grotto and whoever he was working with.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured, placing a hand on her arm. “I’ll see what Rhy thinks about you speaking with your ex. It’s not my call, the ATF has to agree too. Your ex is currently in their custody.”

She grimaced. “I hadn’t thought of that. But thanks, Steele. I appreciate you asking Rhy.”

He longed to pull her close, but Rosie chose that moment to return to their table. She brought another large cinnamon roll for Brock.

“Will ya be having breakfast then too?” Rosie asked.

“Not for us, Rosie.” Steele drew Harper into the seat beside him. “Brock can stay and eat if he’s hungry.”

“Of course, I’m hungry,” Brock shot back. “But where are you going?”

“Back to the hotel.” He didn’t have to say the exact location, Brock knew they’d been staying at the City Central Hotel. He glanced at Harper.
